I just left San Francisco, where I got to see the annual Chinese New Year parade. That thing was the real deal. Tons of floats, lots of dragons — and tigers (it’s their year, after all) — and deafening firecrackers.
It’s been more than a dozen years since my last visit to San Francisco. My immediate impression as I walked through the awesome financial district and along Union Square: Look at all these Asian people! I was surrounded by my peeps. I couldn’t stand out if I tried.
And then, as I started walking around, I would see these fabulous Asian-themed stores, random stuff that I’m not sure we have in the DC area (or that I don’t know about because you haven’t told me about them!!!). For a few seconds, I would forget where I was, and think, “Is this listed on Destination Asian?”
I’m now in Oregon, but finally head home tomorrow night.
A writer, a mother, a foodie, a runner (by necessity, not by choice), a recovering journalist and now, thanks to Destination Asian, a community organizer (that's right, I don't consider anything wrong with the phrase!) and an entrepreneur. Born in Korea, raised in the States. Proud of my heritage but certainly don't need to be reminded of it by strangers.
